Pokémon has always drawn inspiration from the natural world, often borrowing traits from animals we know and love. Many Pokémon feel instantly familiar because their designs mirror the pets we live with every day. Here are 10 examples of Pokémon and their real-life pet counterparts, with a closer look at how each creature’s personality connects to the animals they’re based on.

#1 Snubbull: The Bulldog Pokémon

Snubbull’s pink, jowly face and sturdy build make it clear that this Pokémon is modeled after bulldogs. Bulldogs may look tough, but in reality, they are affectionate companions who thrive on attention and cuddles. Known for their loyalty and calm demeanor, bulldogs often surprise new owners with just how laid-back they can be. Snubbull, while depicted as grumpy in the Pokémon world, captures that same tough-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside charm of the real breed.

#2 Chatot: The Parrot Pokémon

Chatot’s signature feature is its ability to mimic sounds, a direct nod to parrots. Fun Fact: this Pokemon card has a hidden song in it. The chatots on the clothing line represent music notes, while the socks make them bar notes. When the notese are played it mimmics Chatot's in game sound!

In the real world, parrots are among the most intelligent bird species, capable of learning words, tunes, and even forming strong emotional bonds with their owners. Like Chatot, they can be noisy and demanding, but they bring a lively energy into the home. Parrots also live long lives, sometimes outliving their owners, which makes them lifelong companions much like the personality-rich Pokémon they inspired.

#3 Fidough & Dachsbun: The Bread Roll Dachshund

#3 Fidough & Dachsbun: The Bread Roll Dachshund

A fan favorite for its clever pun design, Dachsbun is a mix of a dachshund and a fresh-baked bread roll. Real dachshunds are small but mighty, originally bred to hunt badgers. Today, they are popular family dogs, loved for their playful nature and bold personality despite their size. Owners often note their strong attachment to family members and their quirky “wiener dog” antics. Dachsbun takes those loyal dachshund traits and gives them a warm, cozy twist with its bread-roll look.

#4 Yamper: The Electric Corgi

Yamper the electric corgi pokemon

Yamper’s design is based on corgi's and their tendancy to "zoom" around. Its stubby legs and lighting bolt tail make it one of the cutest new gen Pokemons. Corgis are famous herding dogs, originally bred to manage cattle in Wales. In modern homes, they’re equally known for their high energy, intelligence, and playful spirit. Their affectionate personalities make them internet favorites, just as Yamper became one of the standout dog Pokémon of its generation. Corgi owners know that behind those big ears and fluffy butts is a dog who always wants to be at the center of the action.

#5 Skitty: The Housecat Pokémon

Is there a more catlike pokemon than Skitty? No.

Skitty is as catlike as it gets: playful, curious, and mischievous. Real housecats mirror these traits, often turning the simplest things like a paper bag or a dangling shoelace into toys. Cats are also creatures of habit, thriving in safe, familiar environments. Just like Skitty spinning in circles or chasing its tail, domestic cats bring endless entertainment to their households while still maintaining that independent streak that makes them so iconic.

#6 Ekans: The Snake Pokémon

Ekans is a straightforward homage to snakes (its name is literally “snake” spelled backward). While snakes can seem intimidating, many species like ball pythons or corn snakes are gentle, quiet, and surprisingly low-maintenance. Unlike Ekans, they don’t coil around to attack, but they do enjoy curling up in secure spots. Pet snakes are popular among reptile enthusiasts for their calm nature and fascinating behaviors, showing that even creatures once feared can be wonderful companions.

#7 Dedenne: The Electric Hamster Pokémon

Dedenne the electric hamster pokemon

Dedenne is one of the Pikachu clones that we see each generation. Its round body, tiny paws, and cheek-pouch motif clearly draw from hamsters. Hamsters are among the most popular small pets for families. They’re nocturnal, love running on wheels, and are known for storing food in their cheeks. These traits reflected in Dedenne’s design. While they may be small, their playful, curious behavior makes them endlessly entertaining, much like their electric Pokémon counterpart.

Fun Fact: Clemont and his little sister carry one around in the Pokemon X & Y anime.

#8 Growlithe: The Loyal Dog Pokémon

why is it that color??

Growlithe embodies the traits that have made dogs “man’s best friend” for centuries: loyalty, bravery, and devotion to their humans. In the Pokémon world, Growlithe is even used as a companion to police officers, mirroring how real-world dogs are trained for law enforcement and service roles. At home, dogs of all breeds provide unconditional love, always eager to play or protect. Growlithe is a tribute to everything we love about having dogs as faithful family members.

#9 Meowth (Thats Right!): The Talking Cat Pokémon

Meowth is a standout Pokémon because of its ability to speak human language in the anime, but beyond that, its sly, independent nature is undeniably catlike. Cats are famously expressive without words, whether they’re meowing for food or showing affection by curling up next to you. Meowth captures both the sass and charm of domestic cats: always curious, sometimes aloof, but forever lovable in their own way.

#10 Scorbunny: The Fire Bunny Pokémon

Scorbunny is bursting with energy, modeled after a rabbit’s boundless hopping and speed. While your pet rabbit won’t leave fiery footprints behind, real bunnies are just as playful and curious. They love to bounce around the house, explore, and nibble on anything in reach. Rabbits also form close bonds with their owners, enjoying gentle pets and quiet companionship. Scorbunny embodies the cheerful chaos of having a rabbit hopping from room to room, making it one of the most relatable Pokémon for pet owners.
